Extract Audio from Video

Save the soundtrack of an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM video as an audio file — WAV for editing, MP3 for listening. Free with a DefyAudio account; the video never leaves your device.

How to Extract Audio from a Video

  1. 1

    Open the Audio Studio

Go to the DefyAudio Studio — the extraction runs in your browser.

  2. 2

    Add your video

Drag and drop or browse for an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM file. DefyAudio reads the video and takes its audio track.

  3. 3

    Choose the output format

In the Format tab, pick WAV to keep the sound uncompressed for editing, MP3 for a small file that plays everywhere, or FLAC, OGG or AAC (.m4a).

  4. 4

Trim if you need to (optional)

Drag the start and end handles on the waveform to keep only part of the soundtrack.

  5. 5

    Export

Export the audio. It is extracted on your device and downloads straight away.

Extract Audio from Video, Privately

An audio extractor takes the soundtrack out of a video file and saves it as an audio file you can play, edit or share. It is the quickest way to keep the sound of an interview, a lecture, a music video, a screen recording or a phone clip without the picture.

DefyAudio reads the video and decodes its audio in your browser through WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded, so private recordings stay on your device.

MP4 to WAV or MP4 to MP3?

Choose WAV when the audio is going to be edited, mixed or archived: it stores the sound uncompressed, so no further quality is lost on the way. Expect a large file — roughly 10 MB per minute at 44.1 kHz stereo, 16-bit.

Choose MP3 when you just want to listen to or share the soundtrack. You set the bitrate, from 64 to 320 kbps; 192 kbps or more suits music, 128 kbps is plenty for speech.

Either way, the result cannot be better than the audio stored in the video, which is almost always already compressed. WAV keeps what is there; it does not restore what the video's encoder threw away.
